Weekly Writing - This Week's Songs

So I'm still shuffling and this week I bring you songs 10 to 13.

Song Number 10:

Dynamite - Taio Cruz

Song Number 11:

Only Girl (In The World) - Rihanna

Song Number 12:

Fever - Michael Buble

I wondered when Michael would show up - I have a lot of his songs on my mp3 :)

Song Number 13:

Planetary (Go!) - My Chemical Romance

Two more songs and I'll be half way there.

And this week on Terrible Minds Chuck gives us 25 Reasons You Should Quit Writing. I am going to ignore him but it is still a good read.

And there is just over a week to go until the Collage Of Inspirations Blogfest... and I have still got to start mine!

Weekly Writing - Don't Say I Didn't Warn You

I warned you not to try and work out what my musical tastes were didn't I? And the songs I got this week for the 30 Day Shuffle Challenge just go to prove the fact that I am nothing if not eclectic.

So the first song of the week (number 6 overall) was this:

I should warn you before you click play... there is bad language.

Riverside (Let's Go) - Sidney Samson ft. Wizard Sleeve

I won't lie... my heart sank just a little when I heard this song start playing. Because I had no clue what to write about. But I didn't cheat and move on to the next song. I stuck with it.

I ended up with a piece of flash fiction that was about 300 words long about compatibility between the sexes in the future. It is something that I could probably expand on at a later date but 300 words were all that I had at the time.

Song number 7:

There You'll Be - Faith Hill

I told you I was eclectic didn't I. So I went from futuristic to a short story about a World War II fighter pilot.

But wait it gets even more random with song number 8:

Big Spender - Shirley Bassey

This one went quite dark. I mean I write about murder and mayhem all the time. But I didn't expect this song to create a story of vigilante who kills date rapers (is that the right term 'date rapers'?) I surprised myself. It's not something you immediately think of when listening to this song but it's what my brain made of it after a few minutes.

And the last song for this week (song number 9):

Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler

I thought this one would be easier when I first heard it. I ended up with a flash fiction piece about a woman who has broken up with her violent ex and decided to get on with her life.

So that was my week in music. Speaking of music I have decided to dispense with my 'Inspirational Tunes' at the beginning of each month. I will post tunes that inspired my writing as and when they appear. Which given I'm taking part int he 30 Day Shuffle is every week at the moment.

It took me a bit of thought to find something to replace them with - and then it hit me - NaNoWriMo countdown. So from now on I shall send you in to a panic at the beginning of each month by reminding you how little time there is until November.

And speaking of NaNo - Camp NaNoWriMo starts it's first term on 1st June. There will be a second one in August. I won't be taking part this year though - I discovered last year that I work much better in November... when it's dark and cold.

Are you going to do Camp NaNo next month?

Weekly Writing - Somebody Once Told Me...

I'm actually starting to really like this whole 30 Day Shuffle thing...

This week I did a little bit better - I did three songs. The reason I only did three will become apparent when I tell you what the songs were.

So the first song of the week, which is actually song number three overall was:

The Puppy Song - Harry Nilsson

Now this one gave me a little trouble because the first idea that came to mind when I listened to it was kind of corny - a woman's pet dog leads her to find the love of her life. So I spent the next couple of days trying to get rid of that idea and come up with another but it wasn't shifting. So I ended up writing the corny story.

The second song (number 4 overall) (and if you listen to it you'll understand where the title of this post came from) was:

All Star - Smash Mouth

The video might also given you an insight in to how I ended up writing a story that involved a superhero after listening to this song.

And the last song (number 5) of the week was:

Upside Down - Paloma Faith

This one led to a slightly surreal story about... well it's difficult to explain... there are people who live upside down to everyone else... but to them they aren't upside down... erm... I told you it was difficult to explain!

So whilst I've been jetting around the blogosphere this week I discovered that Elspeth Antonelli has a sequel to my checklist her list of 10 Lies You Might Tell Yourself Whilst Editing that was recently posted on the The Blood Red Pencil.

The second one is my checklist part two 10 More Lies You Might Tell Yourself Whilst Editing.

And finally this week every time I have a quiet moment I am reminded that I need to actually get on with my collage for the Collage Of Inspiration Blogfest.

It is not something that I can just sling together come 30th May - but I still haven't started. I have elements of it in my head but nothing on the computer screen yet.

So that's enough about me - how are you?

Collage Of Inspiration Blogfest - Coming Soon

I read about this blogfest a couple of days ago and have been umming and aahing whether to sign up for it or not.

I wasn't sure if I could actually make a decent collage... but in the end I thought what the hell?

The Collage Of Inspiration blogfest is taking place on Teralyn's blog, A Writer's Journey, on 1st June.

And is that not one of the coolest blogfest badges you have ever seen?

All you have to do is:

"Most of us have little "helps" that inspire the books we write: pictures, videos, songs, etc. For this blogfest, we're going to compile them for the world to see... Your mission, should you chose to accept it: create your own "collage" of inspiration. It could be a Facebook page, a Pinterest board, a website, a page on your blog, or whatever you're into."

To sign up head over to Teralyn's blog via the link above.

Weekly Writing - 30 Days Starts Here

Well 30 days actually started two days ago.

I have officially started the 30 Day Ipod Shuffle Challenge - I actually meant to start on the first but that just didn't happen.

A cracking start! But I'm off and running now.

So I have only used two songs as inspiration for stories this week.

A word of warning before I tell you what the songs from this week were - there are some very random songs on my mp3 player (no I don't own an ipod!).

Just when you are thinking you have worked out my musical taste something will come along and smash your conclusion to pieces - you have been warned - don't try to fathom out my musical tastes!

So the first song was:

Oh Boy! - Buddy Holly

I ended up with just over 500 words for that one. Now if you didn't know anything about Buddy Holly then you would struggle to see how the story was inspired by this song - but it's my imagination and it will be inspired however it pleases!!! ;-)

And the second song was:

Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi

Somehow I ended up with a 500 (again!) word story set in a post apocalyptic world inhabited by zombies... or should that be just apocalyptic world... if the zombies are still there?

So hopefully next week I will have more than just two - but just two is better than nothing!

Is anyone else having a go at this? How has your writing gone this week?

Inspirational Tunes - May 2012

Another month has been and gone.

And so it is time for another inspirational tune.

Take from it what inspiration you will...

Chasing Pavements - Adele
