Weekly Writing - That Wasn't The Plan!

To say that two or three weeks ago I declared that I would not be doing any planning for this year's NaNoWriMo I'm doing an awful lot of planning...

I'm even doing research!

However at the moment I'm not completely sure how this idea will develop in to a story so technically I am still planless - I'm just not idealess.

Only a month to go and I'm starting to get really excited :) I didn't really get excited about Camp NaNoWriMo. In actual fact that stressed me out quite a bit... and surely it should be fun?!?!

Now I'm off to decide what exactly is going to be October's Inspirational Tune - decisions, decisions. So many songs but only one can be October's!

How was your writing week?

Weekly Writing - Nothing To Report

Just a quick post to say I've not done much this week... I seem to have been doing more reading than writing of late.

My 'to read' list on Goodreads keeps growing everyday!

I've done a tiny piddly small amount of editing work... but I am starting to get excited about NaNoWriMo - just over a month to go!!!

I've got a feeling that this one will be great :)

So how has your writing been this week? As unproductive as mine... or worse? ;)

Weekly Writing - I'm Not Really Planning... Honest!

You may recall in my post last week I made the declaration that I would not be doing any planning for NaNoWriMo this year. That I would just go with the flow. And I still intend to. However I have a feeling that this will be a fantasy/horror novel and so I've been jotting down types of 'monster' that I could have in it. And due their popularity at the moment I have not included vampires or werewolves in that list. And I'm a bit sceptical about including zombies. But I do have six other types of creature/monster I could use... and then of course there is the option of completely making my own up from scratch.

And I'm beginning to slowly get organised. I have what I deem to be a lot of hobbies. About four really. So I'm making a timetable sort of thing, where I get a choice of two different hobbies depending on the day. Writing is not included as that is not a hobby!

And as James Scott Bell says in his book The Art Of War For Writers (are you sick of me mentioning this book yet?), I am also going to include a 'writing sabbath' where I do no writing at all... that includes blogging.

Now I just have to come with a reasonable weekly quota to start with and away I go. I was thinking that I would start with a low quota and build on it while I get back in to the swing of things.

So how was your week?

Weekly Writing - I Promise I'll Do It Tomorrow!

I read an article the other day on copyblogger about how the word 'tomorrow' is stealing your future.

Now it it is only a short article but it did encourage me... but in an odd way. I WILL do it tomorrow.

I have written a little to do list that I will definitely do tomorrow... unfortunately it doesn't involve writing. It mainly includes tackling my very large pile of sewing and making my Auntie a birthday card. However I have no plans for Sunday, except to make Sunday dinner and visit my Nana in the evening so I plan to do some editing then.

In other news I have made two decisions. One is about NaNoWriMo. I've decided I'm going to just go with the flow. I am not going to plan and because of that I can't run out of plot like I did in July. So this November I am going to be surrounded by plot bunnies - or ninja plot bunnies!!!

Image I got from Sandra's Blog - you should really go see her blog especially this pep talk post from NaNoWriMo 2010

So that should be fun... that's the point isn't it?

And oh yes the other 'decision'. About the Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate next year. I think what I'm going to do is look at the events list and then probably pick one day that I will go. It will be cheaper that way. Of course if there is more than one day that I want to go then I will smash my piggy bank open and stay for the weekend but I will definitely go for at least a day...just got to see which events are when when they are announced at the end of September.

Weekly Writing - NaNo Ideas & Writing Books... Again

I realised this week that the last time I actually wrote something (other than a shopping list) was 15th July!!! (Yes I can pin it down that specifically)

Shame on me!

So I've been having thoughts about NaNoWriMo - 59 days to go - and I can't decide whether to actually plan anything or not.

Last year I knew how it began and I knew how it ended. I only roughly knew what happened in the beginning. And I ended up with 50,079 words.

In July I actually wrote down the scenes I needed to put in. However I got to the end of the story and I was only 20,000 words in and then real life got in the way.

So now I don't know whether to starting working out the plot for one of the ideas I have or to just wing it. Go with the flow. Then I wouldn't run out of story... because anything could happen.

So I started reading another writing book... well actually it's an editing book. I've only got as far as page 13 on the first draft from last year's NaNo... and I started in January. So I thought I could do with some help on the editing front.

So I started reading The Weekend Novelist Redrafts The Novel by Robert J Ray.

I read the introduction and it basically described exactly what I had done - line editing.

Line editing is not good as you get bogged down with fixing minute holes in the plot which takes you forever. I have first hand experience of this. One look at my first page says it all. You can see where I've line edited the first half the page... then I realised that it was complete twoddle and doesn't actually do anything for the story. So it has a line through it now.

So I will persevere with The Weekend Novelist and hopefully I first draft edit will progress a bit faster (in fact a lot faster - my current rate appears to be just over a page a month - could it get any slower?)

Before I go I thought I'd share a few words from Yoda, which I think we should all pay attention to:

"Do, or do not. There is no try."

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

So does anyone want to show me up by sharing the vast amounts of writing you've done this week? Come on, somebody must have written something... even if I haven't!

Inspirational Tunes - September 2011

Well here we are in September already.

Here is a song that always brings tears to my eyes - it's such a beautiful song.
