Weekly Writing Or Lack There Of!

I decided, to encourage me to actually keep writing, to write a sort of 'round up' post each week about what I have done that week... writing wise.

So this week this is going to be a short post because I have done very little.

I have got a short story idea whirling around my head and, although it isn't written yet, I think I have found a suitable place to submit it once it is written.

I am also considering taking part in Camp NaNoWriMo this summer - actual deadlines encourage me to work. Self made deadlines do not.

And... there was something else but I've forgotten what it was. Hmmm.

Well as my Nana says 'it must have been a lie.'

Til next week... Toodle-oo!!!

Camp NaNoWriMo!

Yes you read that right - Camp NaNoWriMo - so don't panic and think that we are further through the year than you thought - it is still May.

Anyhoo the people over at NaNoWriMo have to stress we writers out even more than we already are by hosting Camp NaNoWriMo this year - details seem to be a little vague at the moment - they are currently fundraising.

But it is basically the same as regular NaNoWriMo... only it is happening in the summer instead of November. I'm considering having a go at this. As well as the regular November one.

This is good for me - without a deadline I get little done. You may have noticed the tumbleweed going by around here. My last blog post was over a week ago so... I need to get my a*se in gear really.

So hopefully it won't be too long before we get more details about Camp NaNoWriMo so I can plan ahead a little - having a basic plot and maybe a character or two in mind would be a good idea wouldn't it?

Laughter is the Best Medicine

I was going to post this earlier than this... but for some reason the post saved itself as a draft rather than a scheduled post.

I wondered why no one seemed to be reading it!

I think the word I'm looking for is... anyway...

Today is the day of the 'Laughter is the Best Medicine' blogfest, as hosted by Leigh on her blog That's Write, and her partner in blogfest, Lydia and her blog The Word is My Oyster.

Basically all we have to do is share our favourite 'writer' jokes. And if you don't know any writer jokes then basically any joke you want.

I decided to take part in this blogfest... and then realised that I didn't really know any 'writer' jokes - I might have one stashed away somewhere in the recesses of my mind. But then I happened upon one down the back of the sofa that made me laugh... so here it is:

A writer comes home to find his house has burnt down. His sobbing and slightly-singed wife is standing outside.
“What happened, honey?” the man asks.
“Oh, John, it was terrible,” she weeps. “I was cooking and the phone rang. It was your agent. Because I was on the phone, I didn’t notice the stove was on fire. It went up in seconds. Everything is gone. I nearly didn’t make it out of the house. The poor cat is…”
“Wait, wait. Back up a minute,” The man says. “My agent called?”

And now to go off on a tangent...

When I first heard about this blogfest it immediately made me think of a line from a song - That's Your Horoscope For Today!

The line in question is:

Laughter is the very best medicine,
Remember that when your appendix bursts next week.

I know it doesn't sound it but trust me it's funny!

But I thought I'd share the rest of the video with you - a word of warning, just in case there any readers with epilepsy, there are flashing images.

Travelling Around the Blogosphere

As a follower of a large number of blogs... and an occasional blog leapfroger I come across all sorts of tips and advice - some serious, some light hearted, some completely daft.

I happened upon a couple this week that I thought I would share with you.

First up is Mars Dorian and advice on how to stop the dreaded Writer's Block in it's tracks.

And the second link I have for you is a post by Elspeth Antonelli, originally on her blog It's a Mystery, I found her 10 Signs of a Typical Writing Day on blog The Blood Red Pencil.

Enjoy!

I Got An Award!

In a previous post I said that I was 'hitting the ground running' and getting serious with my writing. Well I hit the ground running, stumbled, hit my head and knocked myself out. I then wake up to find my blog has changed quite dramatically and that I have been given an award! (I am kidding about being knocked out... just in case you were concerned.)

Anyway I have been awarded 'The Versatile Blogger' award by Carol over at her blog Carol's Corner.

So I want to say a very big THANK YOU to Carol for that!

Now I have to think of 7 things about myself to tell you... and then the really difficult bit - think of 7 blogs to pass the award on to!

There are so many blogs out there that I'd like to pass the award on to but I've got to whittle it down to just 7.

This will require some thought... I'll have to get back to you.

Inspirational Tunes - May 2011

I said that this would be a monthly thing. However the first of these 'Inspirational Tune' posts was posted at an odd time in April.

I thought it might be best for me to post a new song at the beginning of each month... but obviously I've missed the beginning of May.

So I'll post it now and then start properly at the beginning of June. I have also started a page which will list the links to each post - so you can jump from one month to another!

If you don't find the song inspirational well... tough - I did find it inspirational - otherwise I wouldn't be posting it now.

I had never heard this song before. But at the beginning of May Miss Budget Beauty posted this song on her blog... and it struck a chord with me.

This is a different version to the one that Miss Budget Beauty posted - as in it is a different person singing it.

You May Have Noticed...

... that my blog has changed just a little. Is it really that noticeable?

I don't know what it was about my old blog template but it just didn't feel... writerly enough. I did like my old background. Which is why that background is now gracing my other blog.

I found this background and the basis for my header through The Background Fairy. They have some lovely backgrounds and headers on there - which are free to use... as long as you mention where you got it from... like I'm doing now.

I first came across The Background Fairy through it's sister site The Graphics Fairy - which also has all sorts of lovely things on it - also free to use.

Now I was a little bit worried about attempting to make a header - even if all I did was add some writing to it! But there are a selection of tutorials on The Background Fairy which are very useful - I used this one for creating my header.

So after much more technological input than I am used to - shifting things around, 'this template isn't right', trial and error with colours, 'why isn't that in the middle?' etc. this is now my blog.

It is a lot less purple (don't worry my other blog is as purple as ever!). There are sneaky bits of purple here and there. On The Background Fairy they suggested it would make a good Halloween background, but I think it will look good all year round.

It has a Edgar Allan Poe feel to it... I can't think why... ;-)

Be warned the colours and various bits and pieces will be subject to change over the next week or so whilst I change my mind and settle in to my new surroundings.

I mentioned in a recent post that I was considering having a regular 'musical inspiration' post - I think I will be going ahead with that - it will be a monthly thing.

On my other blog I am currently attempting to read '52 Books in a Year'. I have a picture of the book I'm currently reading displayed in the side bar. I'm thinking of doing something similar on here too - my current research book or something like that. Basically the book on writing I'm reading or book I'm researching from.

So do you like the new 'Life of Writing'?

Hitting The Ground Running... And Another Blogfest!

Well here we are on the 1st May.

I said that today I would get serious in a previous post and here I am... being serious.

I have set up a spreadsheet to keep track of all my work - word counts, if/where it has been submitted etc.

I have my external hard drive ready and raring to go - just got to copy my work over to it (that will mean that I have two completely separate electronic back ups of my work).

Now all I have to do is write two posts about blogfests that I've signed up for, write a post about coming to the end of the A to Z challenge and I can get cracking writing wise.

Actually I'll kill two birds with one stone - and tell you about one blogfest now. Over on her blog That's Write
Leigh T Moore is hosting the Laughter is the Best Medicine blogfest on 16th May 2011.

All you have to do is post your favourite writer joke. Or if you haven't got a favourite writer joke then your favourite job related joke. Or if you are still stuck after that your favourite joke or funny story.

Right that's that done.

What was I talking about? Oh yes, writing. I will return to my previous plan of setting aside an hour a day for writing/research purposes.

I tried that a while a go but life started getting in the way. I will be more diligent this time... hopefully... no scrap that I will definitely be more diligent.

It is kind of difficult though to 'hit the ground running' with a laptop in your arms though... ;-)
