A Picture is Worth 1000 Words...

...but which words would they be?

I decided the other day to set myself a weekly writing challenge in the New Year [not long to go now!]. But at first I wasn't sure what to do.

Then I thought of that phrase 'a picture is worth 1000 words' and I found myself thinking 'but is it really?' [The link will take you to wikipedia which can tell you a little more about the possible origins of this phrase]

And that is when I decided on my challenge.

Every week of 2011, that is 52 for those of you who are not paying attention, I will write 1000 words that will be inspired by a picture. It will be any picture...but it will have to be a picture that I have recently found. So say I'm reading a magazine and I see a striking photograph...I will have a go at writing a story of at least 1000 words. And if a story doesn't come immediately to mind then perhaps a bit of stream of consciousness writing until the inspiration hits.

Or if I see something on my travels, and have my trusty camera phone with me...which is always...then I can capture that image and use that.

I have recently discovered that I'm not very good at explaining ideas so if I've lost you don't worry I've lost many people that way :-)

Anyway as I was saying, as 2011 begins on a Saturday that will be my starting mark. So every Saturday I will start looking for a new picture. And every Friday I will start panicking when I realise that I haven't actually written anything yet.

I will try and post the pictures that I am using on this blog for you all to see...and if anything half decent occurs from these challenges I might post the result on here too. Although if what I have written is rubbish I suppose at least no one will want to copy it and steal it! ;-)

I am also doing a challenge on my other blog The Random Thoughts of Chippy where I will be attempting to read 52 books in a year.

I am kind of wondering what I am getting myself in to though. Writing 1000 words a week...plus continuing research...plus editing first draft...plus whatever else I need to get on with writing wise means I'm going to have a busy 2011!

The Trouble With NaNoWriMo is...

...that now when I write something I am subconsciously trying to make the word count as high as possible. Doesn't matter what it is, a note for someone, a post on a forum, a blog post. See I'm even doing it now!
